Austria: Up to 100 cars involved in pileup on autobahn

VIENNA, Austria -- Fifty to 100 vehicles slammed into each other Tuesday in snowfall on an autobahn in western Austria, police said. One report said many people are believed to have been injured.
Police in the province of Upper Austria said some victims were believed to be trapped in their vehicles and that rescue efforts were hampered by snowfall.
The Austria Press Agency reported that between 40 and 60 people were believed to be injured and that, of those, 15 to 20 were seriously hurt. Authorities declined to confirm the report, saying rescue efforts continued.
Police said the accident happened on the westbound A1 autobahn between the towns of Seewalchen and St. Georgen. No other details were immediately available.
