NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister were found safe Thursday, a day after they walked away from their school and became the subjects of a massive police search.
Instead of waiting for their mother's boyfriend to pick them up Wednesday afternoon, Guerchom Prosper and his sister, Rachel Prosper, walked to a friend's home from North Miami Elementary School without telling anyone, said Joe Garcia, a Miami-Dade County school's spokesman.
Someone at the friend's home then called another adult, who came and took the children home for the night, Garcia said. No one called the children's mother to let then know where they were, he said.
When the friend returned to school Thursday morning, the friend told officials where the Prosper children were, Garcia said.
Police had used bloodhounds and helicopters to search through the night for the children, fearing that they had been abducted.
