
Funeral services held for slain Fort Myers officer
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Funeral services will be held for a slain Fort Myers officer who was shot and killed during a disturbance at a downtown nightclub.
Rookie officer Andrew Widman was shot in the face at close range last Friday after he stepped in to break up a dispute between a man and his girlfriend. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Abel Arango of Naples, ran from the scene while firing at other officers.
Four officers returned fire, killing Arango. Authorities said Arango had a lengthy cirminal record and had spent time in prison.
Tirty-year-old Widman was married and had three small children. He had previously worked as a missionary and youth minister. Visitation at a Fort Myers funeral home will be held tonight and funeral services on Wednesday morning.
