Manatee crossing sign confuses motorists
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Manatees are not ready to walk among us, no matter what a South Florida roadway's sign will have you believe.
The Florida Department of Transportation said construction crews working along Southwest 87th Avenue mistakenly placed a "Caution: Manatee Area" sign, intended for a nearby canal's bank, on a median.
The sign's message seems to alert drivers to potential manatee crossings, which appears unlikely for the strictly aquatic mammals.
District 7 Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, who oversees the embarrassment's home, believes the error to be absurd. "I haven't seen many manatees on the roadway," said the facetious commissioner, whose office has been flooded with colorful e-mails concerning the oddity. "Somebody put the wrong sign in the wrong place."
According to FDOT, the several hundred dollar sign will be removed.
