Crews quickly douse roof fire in Medley

MEDLEY, Fla. (WSVN) -- Firefighters have extinguished a fire at a warehouse labeled Austin Electric, Inc., located at 8205 of NW 74 Ave.

At around 4 p.m. the building's roof caught fire. Authorites said roofing equipment on top of the structure set off the blaze off. They said the source came from a tar pot pump.

There were no injuries, and no one was inside the warehouse when the fire ignited.

A neighbor who first spotted the fire said he first thought residents were in trouble when he saw the smoke. "I noticed dark black smoke going across," said Frank Gonzalez. "I thought one of the homes was on fire."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, along with a truck from Hialeah Fire Rescue, made quick work of the fire. They used ladder trucks to spray water on the melting equipment and tar. The fire never burned through the structure.

By late in the afternoon, fire crews were simply sweeping the debris on the roof, to make sure there were no hot spots remaining. They also had to check the interior of the structure to make sure it was safe for re-entry.

The south side of Northwest South River Drive had to be closed while crews lingered on the scene.
