Habitat for Humanity to build new homes for several South Florida families

LIBERTY CITY, Fla. (WSVN) -- Hundreds of volunteers gathered this morning including Miami-Dade firefighters to kick off Habitat for Humanity's Blitz Build.

Blitz Build is a project where 10 less fortunate families will get a chance to become homeowners in just two weeks. "During the course of two weeks, we're going to be building 10 houses from the stage that you see it right now to completely finished," said Michelle Marcos.

Among the people who volunteered to help build the homes were Miami-Dade firefighters who turned in their hoses for some hammers and nails. "We're not only emergency responders in Miami-Dade County, but we're also part of this community, and we care about the community we serve," said Director Herminio Lorenzo of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, "so anytime we have an opportunity to come and help people who are in need, people who need a good start such as having a great home to live in, we're going to be there."

One Miami-Dade firefighter who grew up in the Liberty City community is happy to see people getting a chance to become homeowners. "It's just a good feeling to give back to the community," said Tammy Jones-Smalls.

In two weeks, one family will be moving into a new home that Channel 7 sponsored. "We are glad for all the volunteers and everybody who is out here. Without them it wouldn't have been possible, so I'm very glad," said Luis Montealegre.

On Jan. 26, when the 10 families get the keys to their new homes, the firefighters will be back to install smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
