Stray bullet nearly kills South Florida woman

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police believe that a stray bullet that nearly killed a woman could determine a suspect's fate.

According to police, while Patricia Perez watched television, a bullet struck her window barely missing her. She lives in the seventh floor of an apartment building about three blocks away from where Miami Police Officer James Walker was shot to death.

Police will use that bullet to determine whether it was fired from the AK-47 that may have killed the officer. "I remember that night, it was a real nightmare for me. You never know what's going to happen to you, even when you're home," said Perez.

Ricardo Ajuste, 21, has not been charged with Walker's death yet, as authorities continue building their case. He is being held without bond. Neither jail nor court records listed an attorney.

Police arrested the Miami man early Wednesday on two counts of attempted murder with a firearm because he allegedly opened fire on a couple in a car near Walker's vehicle Tuesday, Miami police Lt. Bill Schwartz said.

Police say he continued firing as he ran through the apartment complex, and Walker was apparently caught in the crossfire in a North Miami Beach alley, Schwartz said.

Walker was found slumped over the wheel of his unmarked patrol car with his service weapon in his hand, Schwartz said. The weapon had been fired. Walker died from multiple shots fired from a high-powered weapon, police said.
