Art Basel Miami Beach grand opening
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The biggest art festival in the U.S. started in Miami Beach today. It is expected to draw 40,000 people to South Florida.
An exclusive selection of more than 200 leading art galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa will exhibit 20th and 21st century artworks by over 2,000 artists at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Some say that Art Basel in Miami is better than the original sister festival in Basel, Switzerland, due to its tropical climate.
The art pieces can vary from a few thousand dollars to up to $25 million. "South Florida is blessed to have Art Basel in Miami Beach every year. It brings a tremendous economic surge to South Florida, and it enriches all of our lives because it creates an awareness toward art and culture," said Bob Goodman.
Many other mini-festivals and exhibitions have cropped up to piggy-back on the crowds coming for Art Basel. For instance, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is hosting an exhibition of the sculptures of Roy Lichtenstein among their gardens.
Art Basel Miami Beach takes place Dec. 6 - 9, 2007.
