Puppy with slit neck, torn off ears battling for its life
TAMARAC, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are trying to figure out who mutilated and tried to kill a suspected pit bull fighting bait dog.
Members of the Alan Babcock Dog and Cat Rescue discovered the abused pit bull puppy on the steps of a residence, near the corner of Oakland Park Boulevard and Andrews Avenue, Tuesday morning.
Rescue officials transported the 5-month-old dog to veterinarian Darko Mladenovic, who placed the ailing puppy on intravenous bags.
The puppy's more notable injuries include torn off ears and a slit open neck, which the vet had to staple back together. It is the bites on the puppy's head, however, that lead Alan Babcock Dog and Cat Rescue's Cheryl Szary to believe that the dog was being used as bait in pit bull fighting.
Like Szary, Doctor Mladenovic believes the puppy was a pit bull fighting bait dog and adds that poor performance may have led to the brutality. "The possible scenario was that the dog was not fit for the dog fights and somebody just wanted to get rid of him," said Mladenovic. "They made a deep cut, thinking that would do the job because there was a lot of bleeding and left him to die." The 20-year veterinarian adds that the injuries sustained by the young pit bull are the worst he has ever seen on a pet.
According to Mladenovic, the 5-month-old, whose next 24 hours will prove critical, must undergo a few more surgeries.
