Habitat for humanity breaks ground on new venture
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Habitat for Humanity, City of Miami officials and soon-to-be new homeowners have broken ground in Liberty City Tuesday morning where more affordable housing will be developed.
At a grounf-breaking ceremony, Habitat for Humanity plan to build eight multi-unit, low-income households for eight families.
One soon-to-be homeowner thanks God for giving her a new home. "I am overwhelmed, and so truly blessed that God has given me the opportunity to have my own home, and my kids will have a backyard," said Sharon Dantzler.
A City of Miami Commissioner says this new development will make a difference in people's lives. "It's time for us to make a difference of whats going on in our lives, and that starts with this," said Michelle Spence-Jones.
Channel 7 News is extremely excited to be a part of Habitat for Humanity. "We are just proud to be involved with Habitat," said WSVN General Manager Bob Leider. "We started back in 1991, and Channel 7 has sponsored over 10 homes but this project is very special because it's multi-family, and it's in an area that needs this kind of help."
Miami's mayor said these new homes will give many people a chance at becoming a homeowner. "We've got so many of these abandoned lots in this area," said Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. "It's an area that's been abandoned and neglected, and through leadership of Commissioner Spence-Jones and the entire City of Miami family, we are making homeownership possible for so many residents in this community."
Officials say the construction starts in a few weeks and the eight families will have a new home by next Spring.
