Police officer in serious condition after Hummer rear-ends cruiser

DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Officials are investigating a police-involved accident that sent an officer to the hospital.

Crews had to resort to the jaws of life to rescue Davie Police Lt. Paul Brugman from his marked unit. The accident occurred westbound on State Road 84 at University Drive.

According to police, Brugman, a 21-year veteran for the Davie Police Department was working an off-duty job protecting workers on the roadway when a Hummer heading westbound struck his vehicle. Brugman was sitting in his vehicle with his lights flashing when the Hummer struck him.

Paramedics transported Brugman to Broward General Medical Center where he is listed in serious but stable condition. The driver of the Hummer was slightly injured and transported to Memorial Regional West.

Charges remain pending following the outcome of an investigation.
