Medical examiner: student runner drowned while cooling off

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Broward County's medical examiner has ruled that the student whose body was found in a lake after a cross-country meet drowned while trying to cool off.

Doctor Joshua Perper says 15-year-old Corey McKenzie likely suffered from heat exposure or heat stroke and went into the lake to cool off, but drowned. There was no trauma to his body.

Davie police say McKinzie started the race with his teammates and was last seen Monday at the one-mile mark. His body was found dressed in his uniform and cleats.

McKenzie was an honors student at Boyd Anderson High School.
