Dogs allowed on beach for 60-day trial

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- A 60-day trial run starts today for pet owners to take their dogs to the beach on weekends.

Dog owners and their supporters cheered last month as Hollywood commissioners agreed to temporarily allow canines to swim at North Beach on weekends. Hollywood commissioners are doing a trial run for the next 60 days, which dogs will be allowed during limited hours on North Hollywood Beach between Custer and Pershing Streets.

Commissioners approved the trial run after hundreds of supporters showed up to a commission meeting wearing black and white T-shirts picturing a floppy-eared dog resting on a beach ball.

Dog Beach of Hollywood collected $2,000 from supporters to pay for the cost of hiring a park ranger to enforce beach rules and plastic bags for dog waste.
