Broward Sheriff teams up with radio stations to find deputy's killer

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne sent out a public service announcement through South Florida air waves to help find who killed Sergeant Chris Reyka.
Jenne asked for the public's help via a public service announcement he recorded in the studios of 99 JAMZ FM. "Do the right thing, help us catch Sergeant Chris Reyka's killer," said Jenne. "This cold-blooded killer fired a half dozen shots into him, some only a few feet away. That killer or killers are still on the loose. We are looking for a large white car, like a Ford Crown Victoria or a Lincoln Town Car."
Jenne says the key to finding the killer is to make sure everyone knows about the $106,000 reward.
Cox radio employees were glad to help out and also hope someone will come forward with some clues. "You've got to do something," said Jerry Rushin. "This is crazy. The guns, period, between innocent kids or not. You have police officers being shot. This is wild."
Early in the morning, Aug. 10, Reyka, 51, was looking for stolen vehicles at a drug store when someone gunned him down, Jenne said.
Callers to 911 described the horrible ordeal on a tape just released to the media. "I'm scared to get out of the car," said one caller. "I don't know if he's OK. I heard about five to six gunshots. I was reversing, the officers lights came on, and then I heard gunshots. Whoever it was got back into their car and drove off."
"He looked like a police officer, but we did not get real close," said a second caller. "The lights are on and everything."
The shooting came after another BSO deputy, Maury Hernandez, was shot in the head Monday after a traffic stop. He remains on life support.
Investigators believe two men were in a white car with a stolen Florida tag, F16-8UJ. As Reyka got out of his police car around 1:20 a.m. to investigate the vehicle, someone exited the white car and shot Reyka at least five times. Reyka did not have his gun drawn, Jenne said.
Reyka was wearing body armor, but police have not released where he took the bullets.
Having received hundreds of tips, authorities continue searching for the suspects, stopping cars resembling the getaway vehicle, but no arrests have been made in the killing. Sheriff's officials amassed a $106,000 reward for information that leads to the killer's arrest.
Investigators continue to search canals and are going door-to-door looking for clues that might solve Reyka's murder.
If you have any information on this deputy's murder, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
