Secretary of state says voting machine flaws now fixed

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Secretary of State Kurt Browning says flaws in optical scan voting machines that could have allowed poll workers to alter election results have been fixed.

Browning now will order counties to work with machine manufacturer Diebold Elections Systems to make sure all their machines are updated with new software that will detect attempts to tamper with them. He is also sending out security guidelines on who should be allowed access to the machines and when.

The flaws were discovered during a Florida State University study commissioned by Browning. The researchers examined fixes Diebold put in place after previous reports of problems. The university found a number of problems still existed that could have allowed poll workers to change results.
