Hialeah Park makes national list of endangered historic places

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) -- The National Trust for Historic Preservation has put Hialeah Park on its list of the country's most endangered historic places.

Hialeah Park is fourth on the list of eleven historic sites in danger of being lost to development.

Getting on the list doesn't ensure that the sites will be preserved, but it brings national attention to local preservation efforts.

Hialeah Park first opened in 1925. Seabiscuit, Citation and Seattle Slew were among the horses stabled there. Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy were some of the dignitaries who watched the races at the 220-acre park.

The Legislature revoked its racing license in 2001. The park's owner closed the park in 2005 and filed an application to develop 37-hundred housing units and shops on the site.
