Construction causes rodent problems at Miami airport
MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Fla. (WSVN) -- Airport officials say they are working to resolve a major rodent problem at Miami International Airport. They say a multimillion-dollar construction project has set rats and mice loose in the terminals.
Passengers at MIA have already witnessed the hairy, disease-carrying vermin scurrying around the airport and rank them as one of the top customer service complaints. At least four passengers have written letters to the airport's complaint department over the last 14 months, the most recent received on Feb. 27.
Airport representatives say they are aware that the rodent problem is very serious and add that they are taking necessary steps to remedy the situation. Workers have set up 700 bait stations around the perimeter of the terminal and also set 30 mousetraps inside the airport.
Besides the skin-crawling feeling some get from the sight of rats and mice in public places, rodents can also carry serious diseases. If a rat travels through a place where food is prepared or where people eat, bacteria can still linger on tables and counter tops. Even if an area is wiped clean, bacteria may still reside. Rats also carry a disease called leptospirosis, which is spread through their urine. It causes flu-like symptoms in humans.
