Third grade teacher charged with 38 counts of child pornography
OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (WSVN) -- A third grade teacher has been arrested on several counts of child pornography.
Police arrested Michael A. Postma, a third grade teacher at Oakland Park Elementary School, Monday after catching him in conversation with an undercover detective who he thought was a 14-year-old boy. Postma had been in contact with the decoy since Dec. 2006.
Officials served the teacher with a search warrant and confirmed photos saved on his computer contained child pornography. He is now facing 38 charges of child pornography.
Parents who live near Postma's home in Plantation are outraged. "It's just terrible," said Randi Stewart. "My kids are grown, but if that would have happened when they were little: homeschooling. You just don't know who your kids are interacting with when they're not with you."
The charges against Postma include transmission of child pornography by electronic device, promoting sexual performance by a child and possession of child pornography. "It makes me sick to my stomach," said Lisa Stobaugh, another nearby neighbor of Postma. "It makes my stomach turn, especially because it's so close by. I don't know if, when he's walking to his car, if he's looking over at my child while he's playing out here."
A district spokesman says that Postma will be moved to a location where he will not work or be near children. A police and internal investigation is pending.
Postma remains in the Broward County Jail with no bond at this time.
