Puppy recovering following vicious abuse
DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A puppy is slowly healing at a local shelter after its ears were clipped in a horrible case of animal abuse.
The 3-month-old pit-bull mix, now named Holiday, was discovered mutilated outside of a dumpster along Highway 441 early Tuesday morning. A good Samaritan brought the pup to the Broward County Animal Shelter, where veterinarians treated the dog's wounds.
Doctors say someone cropped the dog's ears for fighting, in oder to prevent other dogs from having anything to hold on to.Workers at the shelter say this is one of the worst cases of animal abuse they have seen in years.
"I can only imagine what she went through," said Cherie Wachter of the Humane Society of Broward County. "Her ears were raw when she came in this morning. Our vet stitched her up, and even though it still looks really bad, she's feeling a lot better than she did.
If the person responsible for the mutilation of the puppy is caught, he or she could receive up to five years in prison and face a possible fine.
Following her recovery, Holiday will go to a foster home for the next few days. After that, she will be ready for adoption. Anyone interested in becoming a parent for the puppy can contact the Humane Society of Broward County at 954-989-3977.
