Miami boy fatally struck by car while lighting fireworks

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami authorities say a ten-year-old boy was lighting fireworks in the street when he was fatally struck by a vehicle.

Police say Johan Gonzalez was near his home when he was hit shortly before ten last night.

The driver is identified as 19-year-old Carlos Ventura.

Authorities say Ventura fled the scene, but turned himself in a short time later. He's charged with careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.

The boy was airlifted to Miami Children Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation continues.
