Its the ongoing battle of the bulge. Millions of women try diet sodas, diet lunches, even exercise - but they still pack on the pounds. WSVN--It's a dirty crime...

Calories -- they add up fast...

Sneaking on to our bodies...

Pushing the scale to unlawful limits.

Maria: "One day I was a size 8, another week later I was a size 10, then a size 12."

Maria's facing hard time for her diet mistakes.

She bailed on exercise and has been caught red-handed eating over-sized portions.

Maria: "I wasn't exercising enough I was eating more than I should have."

Kristi is another violater.

Her offenses... Drinking too much alcohol and binging on chocolate and food.

Kristi: "I never ate fried food, I never ate pasta, I didn't eat lots of bread but it kinda backfired because I would end up binging."

Nearly fifty percent of women trying to lose weight, sabotage their efforts by consuming a criminal number of calories.

Kristi and Maria thought they could get away with it...

But, after 15 unwanted pounds, the diet police stepped in.

Registered dietitian Lisa Dorfman says women who step out of line, ignore some of the most important rules of dieting.

Lisa Dorfman: "They eliminate whole food groups. Eliminating whole food groups will lead to actual binges on these foods."

Kristi's guilty...

Her second infraction... Too much alcohol.

Kristi: "When I moved here meeting new people all of a sudden I had to incorporate drinking in my behavior."

And that can cost her up to 500 extra calories.

As for Maria, she breaks the laws of dieting... By over-indulging

And scaling back workouts.

Mistakes registered dietitian Joyce Julien says can be killer on your waistline.

Joyce Julien: "You want to leave the table feeling that you could eat more but that you're satisfied."

But beware, exercise is not a license to eat more.

A lack of fiber is also bad news for dieters.

It fills you up and brings your appetite under wraps.

Fruitless diets can also be punishing.

Joyce Julien: "All fruits are good and all fruits offer something."

Anything less than seven to nine servings is a misdemeanor.

And the evidence adds up fast if you bite into the artificial sweetener hoax.

Lisa Dorfman: "One of the biggest problems that people make is that they eat a lot of artificially sweetened products when they're dieting, so they think that they could eat more, but they're getting almost the equivalent amount of calories."

The usual suspects, ice-cream, cookies and chocolate.

After 30 days of strict monitoring, Kristi and Maria shaped up...

And, turned in many of their bad behaviors...

Maria: "I did lose a few inches 8 1/2 inches throughout my body. It does make my clothes feel a lot better."

Kristi: "I know that i've lost somewhere between 11 and 12 pounds total, six inches. I feel like I look better."

Christine Cruz: "For these women, the lesson learned. Keeping your crimes small can keep you out of the big house."
